Happy International Friendship Day.

Friendship with Christ

As we celebrate this year’s International Friendship Day let’s celebrate Jesus Christ who in all His glory reached out to us and offered us eternal friendship which we reciprocate by obeying Him According to Him, ‘ greater love has no one than this than to lay down one’s life for his friends’. What a privilege, what an honor to be called friends of God. As the popular hymn goes –

Theres not a friend like a lowly Jesus , no one else can heal

all our souls diseases ( depression, stress, burnout) no one else

knows about our struggles ( addictions, habits, hang ups)

He will guide till the day is done…there’s

not an hour that He is not near us, no night so dark that His love

can’t reach us.

Another hymn goes something like this –

What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear

What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer…

….He knows our every weakness…can we find a friend so

faithful…

Most times though we claim all the benefits in this divine friendship ignoring our part in the equation which is to love and obey Him. You and I know that friendship doesn’t work that way. True friendship is mutual and reciprocal.

What it cost Him

If not for Christ, we would be wallowing in sin totally separated from God, and without hope. He died that we may live and become the sons of God. He redeemed us from the curse of the law and gave us authority over all the works of darkness. He left His glory and came to this sinful world for you and me. He died for us even while we were yet sinners. Isaiah 53 depicts the enormity of the price He paid for our redemption. He endured the cross, He despised the shame. He was despised and rejected my men, He was wounded for our transgression, He was oppressed and He was afflicted all for our sake. It wasn’t easy.

What it cost us.

Proverbs says if we want to have friends we should be friendly ourselves. To whom much is given much is expected. Even though Christ’s love is total and unconditional in that there is nothing we can do to merit it, we ought to reciprocate His love by obeying Him. I am not saying that His love is something to be earned which makes it conditional. What I am saying is that it should be reciprocated. We love Him as He first loved us and we express this by obeying Him and sharing His passion for the lost. His pain should be our burden. His cares should be our cares. He says if we love Him we should keep His commandments.

Let’s take time to truly deepen our relationship with Him that there will have been measurable growth by next Years International Friendship Day. Let’s measure our obedience quotient and make the necessary adjustment. He says if we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us. Finally let’s reach out to your friends today and appreciate them too. He put them in our lives.

Happy International Friendship Day.❤️.
