According to the Daily Mail, a recent survey showed that on the average women check their reflections at least eight times a day and use a variety of surfaces to do so, one of them being mirrors. Even Snow White’s  wicked step mother looks into her mirror, asking, “mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?”. Unfortunately, this  is not a fairy story but about the reality of our lives. We are constantly glancing at our reflections in mirrors and every other surface but we are not looking into the mirror of God’s word. Days, weeks, months go by without even a peek  into the Bible.

James  1:22-25 says, “Don’t fool yourselves into thinking you are a listener when you are anything but letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away and two minutes later have no idea who they are and what they look like. ( Message). Comparing the Bible with the Word  of God, James admonishes us to not only read the word but do it. He assumes that the people are actually reading the Word but just not doing what it says.

We may spend thirty minutes in front of the mirror getting our eye brows in that perfect shape ( eyebrows have become a work of art by the way). Foundation, lipstick, hair must be just so. I was once in public transport and this young woman brough out her compact, make – up purse and spent the next thirty minutes applying  her make up quite oblivious to other people around her. The first thing we do each day is to check our phones for our status on social media, which is still all about image. Meanwhile, we don’t look into the Word  of God to see how we really look on the inside.
I want to challenge us to take a poll of how many times we look at our reflections on any surface, be it smart phone, mirror or any other surface.  Let’s also take a poll as to how many minutes we spend in God’s word on a daily basis. By His word, I mean the Bible not  ” e- votionals”, podcasts, blogs and other things that may contain traces of the word of God. Are you satisfied with the statistics? Let’s discuss?

Most times we  are not happy with our reflections. We tweek here, touch up this, wipe some oil off, decide to shed some weight or make some other adjustment. As we look into the Word of God, it also shows us the spots and wrinkles, and blemishes. It may be the spot of unbelief, grumbling, jealousy, laziness. It may show that we have put on weight, carrying unnecessary weights of sin, painful emotions. Mirrors don’t lie. The Word of God will reveal you to you.

Let’s pray about it. Let’s get back into the Word. There is simply no alternative. Let’s ask for the help of the Holy Spirit. We already know how important it is. For some of us, it’s been such a long time. We’ve tried to get back into the culture but the words appear to bounce back. It’s like the Bible is written in some foreign language and we feel so dry. We’ve given up and just drifted into this superficial relationship with Christ and His Word.  It’s time to make a change. I don’t know how far you’ve gone, but it’s the direction you are facing :  Away from God and His word or towards Him.  All I know is if you are sincere God will help you.
